BUILDING GRIP TO PRESENTATION

Updated: Nov 5

Connect the hands. Drive the gun.

The Building Grip to Presentation Drill teaches the exact moment your support hand joins the gun and a repeatable two-handed grip is formed, then drives that grip straight to full extension with no wasted motion. A consistent grip is the foundation of reliable shooting: when your grip varies, recoil and recovery will too. Repetition builds muscle memory; a correct sequence builds the confidence you can trust under pressure.

Why this drill matters:

Your grip is the steering wheel for every shot. Most shooting problems downstream (poor recoil control, inconsistent sight return, erratic splits) begin with how you build and maintain that grip. This drill isolates that step so you can master it under zero pressure. It teaches you to create the same mechanical alignment every single time, keeping the gun stable from draw to follow-through. When your grip becomes automatic, your mechanics become consistent and you can focus on seeing, not fighting.

It also reveals breakdowns like:

  • Inconsistent grip pressure

  • Poor, inconsistent hand placement

  • Rushed extension with no visual focus

If your first shot is off or your grip feels disconnected, this is the drill that fixes it.

Set it up:

  • Distance: 5-7 yards

  • Target: IDPA 8″ circle

  • Rounds: 1 per rep

  • Reps: 15

  • Start Position: Compressed ready

How to run the drill:

1. Begin in compressed ready with your dominant hand on the gun.

2. Bring your support hand to the gun and establish full two-handed grip.

3. Drive the gun straight out to full extension while acquiring sight alignment.

4. Pause at extension to check grip tension, wrist lock, and sight picture.

 5. Fire 1 round into the center of the circle.

6. Return to compressed ready and repeat for a total of 15 reps

What you are actually training:

  • Consistent grip formation: You are building the habit of joining your hands the same way every time to support stability and control.

  • Visual alignment during extension: You are learning to drive the gun to eye level without disrupting sight picture.

  • Wrist tension and lock-in: You are reinforcing wrist positioning that supports recoil management and steadiness.

  • Controlled presentation tempo: You are training yourself to move with purpose, not speed, so your extension ends with accuracy.

Drill Tips

Grip then present. Take the extra half-second to lock in a grip that won’t break under fire.

The Building Grip to Presentation drill is introduced in Week 1 of the Fusion Targets 12 Week Pistol Program. It teaches shooters how to create repeatable mechanics that make every shot feel predictable and controlled.
