DRIVE THE GUN DRILL

Updated: Oct 1

Eyes lead, gun follows.

Train sight tracking and grip control by building the link between posture, vision, and precision.

Why this drill matters:

The Drive the Gun drill helps shooters develop grip strength, sight awareness, and extension timing. This foundational skill builder is ideal for sharpening your shot before moving into more dynamic work.

It also reveals the habits that slow you down:

  • Overconfirming the second shot

  • Floating into position instead of locking in

  • Waiting for “perfect” sight picture instead of acting on acceptable alignment

If your transitions are slow or sloppy, this is how you sharpen them.

Set it up:

  • Distance: 5 yards

  • Target: Colored Hex Zones

  • Rounds: 1

  • Reps: 6

  • Start Position: Compressed ready

How to run the drill:

a. Start in compressed ready with a broken grip

b. One your own count, build a firm two-hand grip, and drive the gun forward to full extension.

c. As soon as your sights land and settle, fire one shot.

d. Do not rush the shot. You must see your sights clearly before breaking the shot.

e. After firing, return to compress ready and repeat.

What you are actually training:

  • Grip formation: You’re reinforcing the process of building a correct two-handed grip from compressed ready.

  • Posture and grip control: You’re learning to drive the gun forward with intent while keeping the sights stable..

  • Sight acquisition discipline: You’re training your eyes to lead the extension and settle the sights before breaking the shot

  • Shot timing: You’re building the habit of firing only once the front sight has settled — not before.

  • One-shot precision: You’re practicing clean, controlled first-shot accuracy from a deliberate start position.

Drill Tips

Don't just throw the gun out and hope your sights land where you need them. Drive it with purpose. The better your extension, the less time you’ll spend stabilizing your sight picture.

The Drive the Gun drill is part of Week 1 in the Fusion Targets 12 Week Pistol Program. It’s a clean, focused way to hardwire fast transitions that don’t sacrifice accuracy.
