DOT INDEX DRILL: DOUBLES

Two shots. One dot. No forgiveness.
The Dot Index Drill: Doubles variation ups the accountability by demanding two accurate shots into a 2-inch circle. It’s not just about pressing fast — it’s about pressing twice without letting your grip, eyes, or patience collapse under pressure.
Why this drill matters:
Firing a clean first shot is easy. The second one shows if your fundamentals are real. This drill teaches you to maintain visual focus, grip pressure, and trigger discipline through rapid pairs into tiny zones. It’s humbling and incredibly effective.
It also reveals key breakdowns:
- Losing sight alignment on the second shot
- Collapsing grip pressure during recoil
- Rushing cadence instead of confirming sights
If your second shots are always off, this drill will fix the why behind it.
Set it up:
- Distance: 3 to 5 yards
- Target: Two 2-inch dots on the Fusion Target
- Rounds: 20
- Reps: 10 reps, 2 rounds per rep
- Start Position: Compressed ready
How to run the drill:
a. From compressed ready, fire two rounds into the left dot
b. Reset and run the same into the right dot
c. Repeat this pattern for a total of 10 reps, alternating sides or running clean strings
d. Score hits and track how often your second round strays

What you are actually training:
Controlled recoil recovery: You are learning to maintain front sight focus and grip through the second shot without letting the dot drift.
Visual patience under pressure: You are practicing waiting until your sight picture returns before sending the second round.
Trigger reset with discipline: You are reinforcing clean reset and press mechanics, even when the tempo is high.
Grip strength and stability: You are testing your ability to hold the gun down through recoil and return the sights to center.
Cadence awareness in precision shooting: You are developing internal pacing that matches what your eyes are actually seeing.
Drill Tips
Let your eyes settle between rounds. Two fast hits should still feel deliberate, not panicked.
The Dot Index Drill: Doubles appears in Week 9 of the Fusion Targets 12 Week Pistol Program. It forces shooters to own every round by controlling not just the first hit, but the follow-up too.
