DOT INDEX DRILL: DRY-FIRE

Train your eyes. Drive the gun.

The Dot Index Drill in dry fire strips everything down to mechanics and visual discipline. No recoil. No excuses. Just you, your grip, and your ability to track between tiny targets with intent. This is where speed meets structure.

Why this drill matters:

Transitions are where most shooters waste time or lose control. This drill develops visual pacing and efficient movement between precision targets. You will train your eyes to lead and your hands to follow, every single time.

It also uncovers common flaws:

  • Moving the gun before the eyes

  • Rushing the trigger press without clear alignment

  • Allowing sloppy mechanics just because it’s dry fire

If you can run this drill clean at home, you will move faster and shoot smarter on the range.

Set it up:

  • Distance: 3 to 5 yards (wall or dry fire backdrop)

  • Target: Two 2-inch dots on the Fusion Target

  • Rounds: 0

  • Reps: 10

  • Start Position: Compressed ready

How to run the drill:

a. From compressed ready, dry fire one round into the left dot

b. Transition immediately and dry fire one round into the right dot

c. Reset and repeat, focusing on visual lead, clean prep, and grip pressure

d. Run at a realistic pace, using a metronome or shot timer par time if needed

What you are actually training:

  • Visual target acquisition: You are building the habit of locking your eyes onto the next dot before initiating movement. This prevents overdriving and helps accuracy.

  • Smooth and efficient transitions: Your hands follow your eyes. This drill reinforces clean movement without jerking or overshooting.

  • Trigger prep and press in a dry setting: You are training your trigger finger to press without disrupting sight picture, even without live feedback.

  • Consistent dry fire discipline: Running this drill repeatedly helps develop structured practice that translates to real performance.

  • Mental focus on small targets: You are improving your ability to treat every rep seriously, with no wasted movements or lazy mechanics.

Drill Tips

Watch the dot, not the gun. If the front sight is late, the hit would be off in live fire.

The Dot Index Drill: Dry Fire is part of Week 8 in the Fusion Targets 12 Week Pistol Program. It helps shooters build fast, disciplined transitions and sight-focused mechanics that carry over to live fire.
