REACTIVE DOUBLES DRILL

Updated: Nov 9

Don't predict. React.

The Reactive Doubles Drill forces you to fire only when you see what you need to see. Each shot is a test of patience, visual clarity, and discipline. No guessing, no panic presses. Just smooth, sight-confirmed doubles that keep you honest under pressure.

Why this drill matters:

Too many shooters rely on rhythm instead of visual confirmation. This drill breaks that habit and teaches you to let your eyes guide the next shot. It's a simple setup with tough accountability.

It also highlights common breakdowns in performance:

  • Firing the second shot before sights return

  • Slapping the trigger to keep a fast cadence

  • Losing grip pressure between rounds

If you’ve ever struggled to keep both shots in the A-zone under pressure, this drill shows you why and helps you correct it.

Set it up:

  • Distance: 7 to 10 yards

  • Target: IDPA 8" circle

  • Rounds: 20

  • Reps: 10 reps, 2 rounds per rep

  • Start Position: Compressed ready

How to run the drill:

1. Start from compressed ready.

2. On your signal, fire 1 shot, then rebuild your sight picture, and fire the second shot only when you have confirmed your sight picture.

3. Do not rush. This is a reactive shooting drill, not predictive.

4. Reset fully between reps.

What you are actually training:

  • Sight confirmation under recoil. You're reinforcing the habit of waiting for the sights to return before breaking the next shot, instead of predicting or rushing.

  • Trigger control on follow-ups. This drill isolates your second trigger press, helping you maintain the same control and precision as the first.

  • Grip consistency between shots. You're learning to hold your grip integrity through the recoil cycle so the second shot doesn’t drift.

  • Breaking cadence-based shooting habits. By removing tempo and focusing only on visual input, you train your brain to fire based on feedback, not rhythm.

  • Close-range accountability. At 7 to 10 yards, there’s no room to fake control. The target reveals every inconsistency.

Drill Tips

Let vision set the pace. The second shot only happens when your eyes confirm alignment. When you build that discipline in practice, speed shows up later.

The Reactive Doubles Drill is part of Week 5 in the Fusion Targets 12 Week Pistol Program. It’s one of many drills designed to break bad habits and rewire the way you shoot, with structure that actually works.
